Hebei University, located in Baoding, a famous historical and cultural city, is jointly established by the People's Government of Hebei Province, the Ministry of Education, PRC and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence.  It is one of the five key universities supported by Central China, a member of "Central and Western Universities Alliance", a host institution for foreign students studying in China with Chinese government scholarship, and the first Yan 'an spiritual education base for universities in China. It has graduate school and the qualification of "Recommended postgraduate exempted from examination".

Hebei University was founded in 1921, originally named Tianjin Technology and Business University. In 1933, it was renamed Tianjin Industrial and Commercial College. In 1948, it was renamed Jinju University. In 1951, the Central People's Government took over Jinju University and changed it into a national university. In 1952, Engineering College and Finance College of Jinju University were merged into Tianjin University and Nankai University respectively. On the basis of Normal College, Tianjin Normal College was built on the original site, continuing the history of Hebei University. In 1958, Tianjin Normal University was expanded into Tianjin Normal University, which was later designated as one of the five key universities in the province. In 1960, it was rebuilt as a comprehensive university and named Hebei University. In 1970, Hebei University moved from Tianjin to Baoding, Hebei Province.

As of May 2016, the university covers an area of 2,500 mu, including the main campus, the new campus and the Medical Department, with a construction area of 1.12 million square meters and a total fixed assets of 1.9 billion yuan. There are 30 second-level colleges with 94 undergraduate programs. There are more than 3,300 faculty members, more than 5,500 full-time doctoral and postgraduate students, and about 22,000 full-time undergraduate and junior college students.
